Patient Capital: Support Entrepreneurs in Pakistan

Posted by alamdar on september 28, 2009

The debate over foreign aid often pits those who mistrust “charity” against those who mistrust reliance on the markets. Jacqueline Novogratz proposes a middle way she calls patient capital, with promising examples of entrepreneurial innovation driving social change.

Jacqueline Novogratz leads Acumen Fund that works very similar to MKFC Stockholm College, that aid and social development should take a business-like approach to improving the lives of the poor in a long term approach.

Young Pakistanis Take One Problem Into Their Own Hands

Posted by alamdar on maj 20, 2009

Ghalib Market Lahore

A group of young Pakistani friends, sick of hearing their families complain about the government, decided to spite them by taking matters into their own hands: every Sunday they would grab shovels, go out into their city, and pick up garbage. It was a strange thing to do, particularly for such students from elite private schools, who would normally spend Sunday afternoons relaxing in air-conditioned homes. But the students were inspired by the recent success of the lawyers’ movement, which used a national protest to press the government to reinstate the country’s chief justice, and their rush of public consciousness was irrepressible. Everybody keeps blaming the government, but no one actually does anything,” said Shoaib Ahmed, 21, one of the organizers. “So we thought, why don’t we?”
“The youth of Pakistan wants to change things,” said Shahram Azhar, the lead singer for Laal, a Pakistani rock band, reflecting an attitude that is typical of this rebellious younger generation. “The only answer to Pakistan’s problems,” he added, “is a broad-based people’s movement.”

Youth display true spirit of Pakistan at Euro-speedway

The students from NUST (National University of Science and Technology) got nomination for the ‘Best Team Spirit’ in the Shell Eco-Marathon at Euro-speedway, Lausitz, a Formula One racetrack in Germany. The team from GIKI got nomination for ‘Best Communication Skills’. The competition is held among various categories and classes, specific to the type of vehicles. Fuel efficiency is the first category that looks at how far a car can travel with just one litre of fuel. The fuel too is classified into petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) among other kinds and the speed of the vehicle is a criterion.
The event is designed for the next generation of designers and engineers to come up with such vehicles that are environmentfriendly and at the same time consume lesser fuel to cover maximum distance.
Interestingly, to keep a balance on road, most of the drivers of these strange looking vehicles were girls, but their minimum weight was 50kg. Every year, thousands of students participate in the marathon and come from universities, colleges, technical institutes and high schools from around the world. Working with a faculty mentor, these teams are often at the cutting edge of innovative engineering solutions that make transportation more efficient, while reducing the environmental impact. The marathon began in 1939 at a research laboratory in the US as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicles. From these modest origins, the organised competition for fuel economy evolved and moved to Europe. Every night after the race ended, there was a party in which all teams had their cultural shows. It also becomes a platform for the younger generation to meet, interact and learn about various cultures of the world as it is open to all countries.

Microcredit’s for Community Action Plans

Posted by alamdar on maj 5, 2009

Our Ghanian partner Kwabena Obiri-Maino has taking further training in microcredit’s for his Community Action Plan programme in Ghana.

The program was to learn more about micro- finance/ micro-credit, and how to implement the process into these projects that are currently at hand, Kwabena says.

Kwabena will present his his work at eLearning Africa this year in Senegal. If you are there you can ask him questions about community action development, sustanible development and other microfinance question. If you won’t participate in the conference, comment the blog and we will let Kwabena answer the questions.

There is much to learn about micro- finance, even here in Ghana, the government has come to the realization that it is a way to reduce poverty in poverty ridden communities; if the people are taught and trained well to use to their betterment, Kwabena says.

G20 SHOULD GIVE PRIORITY TO SOLUTIONS FOR THE POOR!

Posted by alamdar on april 3, 2009

The need of change in the poor countries is dramatic. The solutions must be defined to realize sustainable change, and the organisation and performance has to be transparent. Aid commitments must be designed to ensure real impact. The entire knowledge and amount of worldwide experiences must become locally accessible to people involved in the changes. With the right tools and support the power of change will emerge locally from people themselves

Today world leaders meet in London to discuss plans to address the current economic crisis. Also the UN Millennium Campaign and many civil society partners are calling on the G20 leaders to give priority to solutions for the poor. The economic crisis threatens to push more than 50 million more people into poverty and reverse achievements made on the Millennium Development Goals.

This crisis, manufactured in rich countries cannot be used as an excuse for rich countries to renege on their aid commitments to poor countries, which are already bearing the brunt of the financial crisis.
